Is this a home you intend to live in for a long time? Is there some sentimental attachment to this place?

Sometimes people’s personal needs or desires are not in alignment with design choices that maximize value adds to their homes. For instance, one client really wanted a huge kitchen but that meant there would be no room for a dining room. How important is the resale value of your home to you? Do you have a trusted realtor to consult about home value during this process?

Do you have a really clear view of what you want to happen in this project? If so, are you open to design suggestions? Though we feel that our design feedback is valuable (and sometimes critically necessary), some clients are so sure of what they want that they would rather us not spend any billable hours exploring alternate possibilities.

In all our projects, the clients always have one piece of information that the rest of the design and construction teams don’t have: what the actual budget is. For some clients the budget is a goal that can flex. For others the budget is a hard number that we absolutely cannot exceed for fear of financial insecurity. While you never have to share with us what the actual number is, it is extremely common for a client to have champagne taste and a PBR budget. Feel free to use this space to share anything we should know about the budget.

Some people find the process of making choices around designing a home to be fulfilling and others find it to be tiresome. What is your relationship to this process?

Knowing that you will have to be involved in some decision making around floor plan layouts and major schematic elements, how involved do you want to be in design details?

Some people's goals make them stand out in style or size with their neighbors. How important is it to fit into your neighborhood?

Are you more of a romantic or a pragmatist?

Essentially, it is an architectural designers job to communicate ideas about a design. While there are some ways of communication we must use, like drawings and digital 3D models, is there some means of communication that would work best for you?
